Overview

A wide range of companies in Ireland offer services that cover home & mobile phone, broadband and TV. The former State company Telecom Éireann or Eircom is Universal Service Provider and now known as Eir. Additional providers have come in and have created their own selection of packages that don’t only offer a landline but also include broadband, cable TV and mobile phone bundles. Providers also vary in the type of connection they offer. You can choose between:

  • ADSL/fixed line connection
  • fibre-optic cable available in certain areas
  • satellite broadband
  • wireless broadband
  • mobile broadband

Internet speeds

Internet speed varies depending on the connection you choose, where you live and a few other factors but in general you can get up to 240Mbps or up to 360Mbps. Up to 1,000Mbps are possible in areas with the fastest fibre to the home connection. Your provider will inform you about available speeds in your area.

Contract length

Contracts are usually set up for a 12 or 18-months period, but there are also 30-day short term options available with mobile broadband.

Cancellation period

Fixed line providers usually offer a 14-day cooling off period for home broadband. You’ll be able to cancel your contract during that time period. Don’t forget to do this in writing via email or post to have proof. Smaller wireless providers often don’t offer a cancellation period.

TV licence

If you decide on a bundle that includes TV, you’ll also need to get a mandatory TV licence. You can purchase it through the website of the Irish post office. You can also apply to do this via direct debit every year. You can download the form here.

Payment methods

As in any other country you can pay your bills by direct debit from your bank account. Another option is paying your bills in a payzone agent, which is usually a shop or petrol station. For example, operators like Eir, Virgin Media and Digiweb accept payments in this way.

Installation & Charges

Installation of fixed line broadband is usually free. The modem will be sent via post and you’ll be able to plug it in and connect to the network yourself in a couple of easy steps. Wireless and mobile providers may charge you for installation and the devices required for connection.

Watch out for charges that may apply when you exceed your download limit. To avoid unpleasant surprises at the end of the month, think about what kind of user you are before you choose your broadband bundle. If you’re only using the Internet for checking emails and social media, you’ll be fine with a certain data allowance. But if you are you into gaming and streaming movies, you should be looking for an unlimited package.
