4 things you need to know about satellite broadband

satellite broadband

Satellite broadband is a good option if you’re in a rural area that only offers slow broadband or isn’t served by landline or wireless broadband. It uses the same kind of satellite system that's also utilized for weather forecasting, satellite TV broadcasts and GPS. As the satellite sits high up in space, it provides equal quality of coverage for every household it is connected to.

1. How does it work?

Satellite broadband works via a small dish that connects to a satellite in geostationary earth orbit at about 36,000 kilometres above the planet. The dish receives and transmits data and transfers the information to a modem in your house. This satellite modem can be connected to a wireless router for a wireless connection to as many devices in your home as you like.

2. What internet speeds can I get?

Satellite broadband can be a good solution for areas with slow or no fixed line broadband. Speeds vary from country to country. In Ireland, you can get up to 20 Mb download and up to 2 Mb upload speeds. Similar to fixed line broadband, speeds can vary according to your usage and how busy the network is when you’re online. Checking your emails, social media and streaming movies is no problem. Online gaming is the only activity on the internet  satellite broadband providers do not recommend. The distance the signal travels from the satellite to your home will cause latency that will make playing online games difficult.

3. How is satellite broadband set up?

You need to know two things in preparation for setting up satellite broadband:

  1. Is there a line of sight to the satellite you’re going to use near your house? You can use apps for Android or iPhone to check this.
  2. Do you have a power source for your new satellite broadband?

If you’re having issues with the line of sight to your chosen satellite, you can relocate the antenna to your property or point it to a different satellite.

When you order satellite broadband, you can get the equipment sent to you and set it all up yourself. But if you don’t feel confident enough for this DIY option, a technician can come to your house and get it all ready for you.

Here’s an idea of what your kit will contain, should you choose to go DIY:

  • Antenna or Dish
These will usually be fixed to your property externally but can also be free-standing or mounted on a flat roof if required.
  • Transceiver & Cable
The transceiver will be attached to the antenna and the cable will be linked to the satellite modem.
  • Satellite Modem
You’ll need to decide on where you’re going to locate your modem inside your house and whether you’ll need more than the standard-length cable to be connected to your transceiver. If you want to connect wireless, you’ll need an extra wireless router that can be connected to the satellite modem.
